It's one of the most terrific characters of the era. When I first heard the voice of "GUS," the murderous computer on the Orient Express, it immediately made me think of this one. It'd make for a humorous webisode to have the two of them conduct a conversation.David Pirtlehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00636601389899125100noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386390949828958591.post-62801127888349080852015-07-09T04:17:31.304-07:002015-07-09T04:17:31.304-07:00I've been continuing my rewatch of the pertwee...I've been continuing my rewatch of the pertwee stories with my dad. I confess this was one I wasn't sure of. When I first watched it many years ago I found it a rather slow affair. Maybe this was that at 13 the romantic subtleties went past me, maybe it was the fact that I was comparing it to stories like Day of the Daleks and The carnival of monsters and infirno I don't know.
Either way I completely loved it this time around, from the Doctor's visit to metabelis, to the claustrophobic mine, to Boss being down right awesome!

I think the two things that really struck me particularly, is thatt despite this being a huge drama story for the regulars with some very memorable villains, the extras were wonderful. I loved Joe's horror at Bert's death, which came quite naturally from the fact that she developed a bit of feling for the "Perky little Welshman" as she called him. This is how to do character deaths of miner characters in who, we don't need to be tol! to care about Bert, Joe cares about him because he was just a quite cheerful nice guy, and we feel as she does.

The other thing that struck me, is that like a lot of Pertwee stories, the Doctor here actually develops the solution. I am getting a little sick of the Doctor just saying effectively "monster begone!" and sending all the nasties running. the early stories however the Doctor, though definitely ingenious, still had to come up with the solutions himself, often with the aid of others.

My only cryticism is that the hole Boss linking to computers across the world plot felt a little tacked on because they needed a big bang. I fully agree Boss is probably the best loopy computer in Doctor Who, however after the maggots are dealt with a vague mention of "something bad happening" which Mike Yates got from the unfortunate Gc employee seemed a rather dim excuse to pin the conclusion on, I do wish Boss's plans had been sign posted a bit previously if that was the angle the story was going.

Still, this one was sooooo much better than I recall, which is definitely a nice surprise, it's almost like discovering a hole new story.
darkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15526681809763999806noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386390949828958591.post-20650474161130904922013-08-06T02:50:27.163-07:002013-08-06T02:50:27.163-07:00The ultimate Pertwee story. The ultimate Pertwee story.Audrey the Leviathan Vampire Girlnoreply@blogger.com
