Granted it didn't help that Jodie's Doctor seems so far to be written like Tennant's and I think that's a shame. I'd rather see a new take on the character than just repeating what's been done before.

I also felt the villain was too weak. I can't help but compare it to the opening eps of the other two showrunners. You mention Rose and while your right in saying that the threat was just there to service the plot, the threat itself was something unique and creative (at least to first time viewers anyways)- sentient plastic makes for a more unique and intriguing threat than a generic Predator knock-off. The TARDIS also felt too crowded to me but that may change now that we've lost Grace and have 3 companions instead of 4.

I'm a little skeptical going into the Chibnall era and have been since he was announced. His episodes weren't anything too exciting or unique concept wise (and while I love well written characters I think Doctor Who exploring unique and bizarre locations and threats is important for it) and I'm hopi that won't be the case for all the writers. The next time trailer made the next ep seem equally generic.

With all that negativity said- I don't think this episode was bad, just underwhelming. I'm hopeful about the future of the season and seeing if/how the 13th doctor develops. And I liked how low the stakes were in this- it was just one life at stake instead of the entire planet. I've felt Doctor Who should be doing more smaller scale stories like that for awhile now, the planet almost getting destroyed or invaded every week just gets repetitive. On the whole I do actually agree with you about the episodes strengths, I was just hoping for more.
