Better than Spare Parts, better than Tomb, better than Invasion. It's a shame this wasn't Capaldi's last episode, as opposed to Twice Upon a Time, which I thought was decent, but not great.David Pirtlehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00636601389899125100noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386390949828958591.post-59906880957137710762018-03-26T13:52:28.505-07:002018-03-26T13:52:28.505-07:00Say what you will about the Moffat Era, but I love...Say what you will about the Moffat Era, but I love the fact it completely refuses to have LGBT characters have unhappy endings and instead lets them have adventures and lives beyond the doctor.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386390949828958591.post-91000705027695864282018-02-27T10:01:15.052-08:002018-02-27T10:01:15.052-08:00In our simple life, love plays a very specific rol...In our simple life, love plays a very specific role. Now we are able to make your love life healthy and it has no space for any type trouble. I'm just calling them Ship Cybermen, but regardless of their title it's evident that we're not seeing the 'real' Mondasians, as it were, same as we didn't see the 'real' Nightmare in Silver Cybermen later in the episode. Moffat said as much himself with the Doctor's little nod to the Mondas, Telos, Pete's World, Planet 14, Marinus variants as separate entities. We likely won't see the Ship Cybermen again, but they definitely were not the Mondasians.

Great review, by the way. twentyonehttp://totterslanereviews.blogspot.com.au/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386390949828958591.post-70257459931426208432017-07-05T21:30:27.615-07:002017-07-05T21:30:27.615-07:00Brilliantly acted, directed and filmed. But, but, but we get another Moffat episode full of gorgeous scenes, fabulous speeches and waves to the past which essentially has no plot. It is always about the last ten minutes, a speech handily made for Tumblr, lashimgs of knowing fanwank and leave 'em gasping. Afraid those tricks are wearing thin for me and I keep seeing the wizard behind the curtain. I still find the Moffat penned episodes under RTD and early Matt Smith sparkling but the further along and the more tricksy and self absorbed it gets, the more the shine has worn off. Capaldi is great acting the Doctor. Without a doubt the best acted Doctor ever. Nobody comes close. Best ever doctor though? Nope. Way too much talking and too many speeches and swathes of inconsistency. The kindness speech was a glory but this doctor laughed at Bill being goaded into shooting him and couldn't care less about a kid drowning in the icy Thames just in the last couple of episodes.

I am sure this will go down as the greatest series of modern Who off the back of these last two beautiful episodes and the magnificence of the acting but as a whole it has been a sloppy affair with loose ends, plots going nowhere, way too much winking at the camera and too much razzle designed for social media and no chops with gravy.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386390949828958591.post-83531683887861451922017-07-05T14:19:18.048-07:002017-07-05T14:19:18.048-07:00What no mention of the first doctor? Ironically I had forgotten all about it by the time I watched The Doctor Falls, so while I was surprised, it was one of those "oh yeah, that's right" kind of surprises.

Call me sentimental, I'm in the camp that is happy Bill hasn't been relegated to a terrible fate, though I too noticed many of the similarities to Clara's departure (certain death followed by magical redemption and life exploring the universe without the Doctor but with an alternate companion) and couldn't help wanting something more uniquely fitting Bill. The only time we've seen this "one season companion" really done right in NuWho or otherwise is with Donna, which was so perfectly, tragically orchestrated that I can't argue with it, as much as I may have wished her fate to be otherwise. My point being, if they're going to commit to killing off a companion, they have to make it satisfyingly tragic, not just cruel (unless of course it's Adric, in which case we all cheer).

I thought Bill's final words to the Doctor were bizarre. Really, the last thing she's going to say is to remind him she likes women, and younger people? Was that supposed to be cheeky? It reeks of the same sloppy characterization present in Knock Knock.

But overall, this was immensely satisfying, and it just reflects how screwed Peter Capaldi was by being saddled with Clara for 2/3 of his time, and apparently with writers more interested in writing for Matt Smith than for him.
Jamiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03111702187037641343noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386390949828958591.post-56486544514398149622017-07-05T11:08:00.741-07:002017-07-05T11:08:00.741-07:00"However, I do think this is indicative of an..."However, I do think this is indicative of an era that has failed to add anything significantly ground-breaking to the Doctor Who ethos"

Yeah, the irony of sci-fi is that the longer it goes on, the 'smaller' the universe becomes. alihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18287658017103606748noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5386390949828958591.post-90075004266601008142017-07-05T06:32:39.253-07:002017-07-05T06:32:39.253-07:00It frustrated me too that the Doctor might believe...It frustrated me too that the Doctor might believe Bill survived as a Cyberman or was destroyed. I have to re-watch the episode but I got the impress that Liquid Bill thought the Doctor was dead until something about her tear dropping on him gave her hope. She may be back for the Christmas special. I am okay for the fairy tell ending with her though I do not disagree with the impact if she had remained a Cyberman. I do think that Steven did a good job of setting up that out. I also would have liked to have seen that Bill had done something to improve the odds of Nardole's success. Maybe flipping the ship around or something.

I do think that Clara's story was mishandled. But I also think that "Face the Raven" felt like an abrupt surreal ending and not in a good way. The message Moffat was trying to convey about the Hybrid and Clara's increasingly becoming a mix of him and reckless was not developed as well as Bill's arc. A shame really as I think her acting chops were up to good scripts and arc. Her simply going back to her death would have been more poignant. And Amy and Rory doing a "it's time for us to stop" would have been just fine.

Overall, I agree with your ratings. Your favorites are mine. Heaven Sent was great. I appreciate these last two episodes and the "fanwank?" lol. That should be allowed now and then. Especially in wrapping up a run on a show.

Best from the U.S.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
